Figures, Logistics and Groups (FLAG)

Note: This test has replaced the CLAN test as of Q2 of 2021.

A multitasking test involving visual monitoring, verbal memory and basic mental maths. The test lasts around ten minutes with a ten second break given after the first five minutes. The pace of the test increases as time progresses.

Figures

Simple mental maths. Quickfire questions to test your multi-tasking. Likely similar to the CLAN arithmetic questions involving addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. Answers must be submitted using the on-screen keypad, not the keyboard.

Logistics

Track multiple aircraft on the screen and respond when they enter the coloured zones (green circle, yellow triangle and red rectangle). Respond by clicking the corresponding button on the keypad. Similar to the colours section of the CLAN test.

Groups

Aircraft will enter the screen and a letter-based callsign will be shown for a short period of time. The callsign will be shown again as the aircraft leaves the screen. You must remember and recall the callsign, and answer questions about the aircraft you have seen. A ‘beep’ tone will notify you when an aircraft enters or exits. Again, this section is similar to the letters section of the CLAN test.

Disclaimer: This explanation has been paraphrased.

“You have essentially 3 tasks: Monitoring when a circled aircraft enters the coloured shapes (the shapes sometimes change and move throughout the test). Monitoring which aircraft are currently still on the screen, and simple mental arithmetic questions which appear about every 10 seconds and disappear after about 4 seconds.

The Aircraft:

  • Only monitor the aircraft which are circled.
  • Ignore any which don’t have circles around them.
  • When circled aircraft fly into a coloured shape, click the corresponding colour on the keypad on the right hand side.

When an aircraft enters or leaves the screen, an audible “beep” will sound and a two letter call sign E.G. “TZ” will appear briefly above that aircraft. You have to remember the call sign, and if the aircraft was leaving or entering the scene. You must also monitor the bottom of they keypad on the right of the screen, as questions such as “is TZ currently on the screen” will appear with an option to click either “yes” or “no”.

This was very tricky because you will have multiple aircraft enter and leave before a question is asked. If you don’t answer quickly (about 4s) the question will disappear.

You will also be asked random maths questions. These are not particularly difficult but you only have once change to answer correctly within about four seconds before the question disappears. You must submit the answer using the on-screen keypad and enter button.

My advice would be to stay calm. I messed up one because I got a bit flustered and misclicked… and as you cannot edit an answer before pressing enter my answer for 12×6 ended up being 972 as I misclicked the 9!

If you think you’ve messed it up (I did) remain calm, reset yourself and crack on. Do not linger on a mistake you think you might have made. Regain focus and carry on.” – M
